Channel In / Channel Out

Gain staging that holds the line.

SmartStem stages every channel to a target RMS level, then checks the output against that same number after your FX chain. You stop guessing what your plugins did to the level.

CHANNEL IN
−18.0
CHANNEL OUT
−18.0
target: −18.0 RMS
How it works

Two instances. One target.

Drop one stage at the front of your chain and one at the back. They share a target level over a link, no manual matching required.

Stage 1
Channel In
Stages the raw signal to a target RMS, −18 dBFS by default.
Your chain
EQ, comp, sat, whatever you load
SmartStem doesn't touch what happens here.
Stage 2
Channel Out
Reads the linked target and corrects the post-chain level back to it.
Features

What each stage does

Every control is the same on both plugins. What changes is which side of the chain it's solving for.

STAGE

Automatic gain staging

Each channel is brought to a target RMS level. Set it once per session, or per channel if a source needs it.

MATCH

Output matching

The output stage reads the input stage's target through a live link and corrects for it, regardless of what your chain did in between.

METER

VU, Peak, and PPM metering

Switch ballistics per stage. The target sits at a fixed reference line, so you can see how far off you are at a glance.

PHASE

Mono check and phase correlation

Audition mono without committing to it, and read L/R correlation in real time. Invert polarity per channel when something's wired backwards.

TRIM

Manual trim and boost

Trim nudges the auto gain up to 6 dB either way. Boost pushes a channel up to 12 dB hotter into your chain on purpose, and you choose whether it carries through to the output or stays local.

FREEZE

Freeze

Lock the gain once you're happy with it. Trim and boost still work on top, so you keep adjusting without losing the calculated baseline.

Formats

Where it runs

VST3 is the primary target. AU and AAX follow on the same linking system, adapted for how each host sandboxes plugin instances.

VST3
First release target. In-process linking, with a shared-memory fallback for hosts that sandbox VST3.
AU
In development. Built for sandboxed hosting from the start, since Logic runs AU instances in separate processes by default.
AAX
In development. Pro Tools always runs AAX out of process, so this uses the same link as AU. Pending Avid certification.
